How an AI chatbot trained on your content works
A general chatbot answers from whatever it learned on the internet, which is why it confidently invents your prices and policies. A chatbot trained on your content works differently. It uses a technique called retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): before answering, it searches your own pages and documents for the passages that match the question, and the AI model writes its answer only from those passages.
That has three practical benefits. Answers are grounded in what you actually wrote. Each answer can link to its source. And when your content changes, the bot changes with it after the next sync, with no retraining and no model to maintain.

Builders are a good way to test the idea. Once a chatbot is part of how you support or sell, owning it usually works out cheaper within the first year, and you control exactly how it behaves.
What an AI chatbot costs to run each month
AI providers charge per token, roughly per word read and written. A typical question sends about 3,200 tokens to the model (your instructions, the matching passages, and the conversation so far) and gets about 250 tokens back.

Indexing is close to free: embedding 300 pages with OpenAI’s text-embedding-3-small costs a few cents. The vector database fits in the free tiers of Supabase or Cloudflare for most small sites, and hosting the answer endpoint on Cloudflare Workers costs $0 to $5 a month. The calculator above does this maths for your traffic.
Keeping answers accurate and safe
- Grounding. The model is instructed to answer only from the retrieved passages, and to say it does not know when they do not cover the question.
- Citations. Every answer links to its sources, so a wrong answer is easy to spot and fix at the content level.
- An evaluation set. Your real questions, with expected answers, run before launch and after every change, so quality does not quietly drift.
- Prompt-injection resistance. Instructions hidden in a message or a page cannot override the bot’s rules or reveal its setup.
- Rate limits and cost caps. Per-visitor limits and a monthly spend cap mean nobody can run up your bill.
- Privacy. Anthropic and OpenAI do not train their models on API data by default, and conversation logs stay in your accounts.
What content makes a chatbot good
The bot can only be as good as what it reads. The best sources are the ones customers already rely on: FAQs, pricing and plan pages, shipping and refund policies, product pages, and help articles. Clear headings help retrieval find the right passage, and outdated pages are worth removing before indexing, because the bot will happily quote them.
